Bird Flu Symptoms

If a avian flu pandemic arrives it will be important to distinguish the symptoms of the Asian bird flu strain (H5N1) from other, more common ailments like normal colds or flu.

The symptoms below are based on the evolution of the bird flu virus as it has impacted human victims so far. These symptoms may change as the virus mutates.

Most frequent symptoms:

Fever, cough, shortness of breath and swollen lymph nodes.

Other common symptoms:

Sore throat, rhinorrhoea (runny nose), moderate to severe muscle pain.

Rare Symptoms:

Conjunctivitis, diarrhea.

How Do I know It Isn't Just A Cold?

A cold rarely involves headache, fever,  significant muscle aches, extreme exhaustion, and severe chest discomfort. Influenza often does.

Stuffy nose and and sore throat are common to both colds and flu.

How may the Bird Flu be different from other flu?

Persistent fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, shortness of breath and acute respiratory distress are seen in bird flu so far. More common flu viruses will usually not produce shortness of breath and the acute respiratory distress that can become so lethal in bird flu.

Bird flu victims often develop viral pneumonia, multiple organ failure, especially involving the lungs.
